The village has many houses that are several centuries old.

Houghton on the Hill has 21 entries in the National Heritage List for England which is the only official and up to date database of all nationally designated heritage assets including: Listed Buildings, Scheduled Monuments, Protected Wreck Sites, Registered Parks and Gardens, Registered Battlefields, World Heritage Sites, applications for Certificates of Immunity (COIs) and current Building Preservation Notices (BPNs).

Houghton was based on seven springs, the water from one was believed by the Victorians to be good for the eyes and, although not listed, the Village Pump at the bottom of Scotland Lane (photograph below) is of historic interest. The pump is still complete and unlike many of the wells in Houghton this soft water well is only about two feet deep whereas most are over 20 feet deep.
